In 1966, Gandhara Industries Ltd. was established with the help of General Motors of England, for the production of cars in the Barabkunda of Chittagong. In the year 1972, during the rule of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Government, the organization was named after Progress Industries Ltd (PIL) under the control of Bangladesh Steel and Engineering Corporation (BSEC) – which is currently being run by BSEC.
